Blog: The Forgotten Covid Warriors; A Tribute to Nurses on International Nurse’s Day

While the world talks about how doctors are risking their lives to save people during the tough pandemic times, it is disgraceful that the nurses do not grab the limelight who dedicate more time and responsibility during such unprecedented times. The doctors perform the mainstream duties but the nurses are on duty throughout the day and night just to ensure the instructions of the doctors are carried out well. They risk their lives more than the doctors as they seldom get facilities equal to a doctor. Yet the only covid warrior that gets mentioned in most news bulletins is only about doctors.

Today on international nurse day (birthday of Florence Nightingale), we celebrate the enthusiasm and dedication of nurses across the world who are the soul of healthcare infrastructure. A report from WHO suggests, “nurses account for more than half of all the world’s health workers, yet there is an urgent shortage of nurses worldwide with 5.9 million (2020) more nurses still needed, especially in low- and middle-income countries”.

While in other developing countries, nurses are paid well and are given facilities of every kind, in India a nurse isn’t treated at par with other medicos. The government must take out some schemes especially for the nurses to showcase their importance in the healthcare systems. Without a nurse, even the best doctor may fall short of providing treatment to the patients.

Let’s celebrate the spirit of the nurses today, who provide us care beyond limits, more so in the tough times of the ongoing pandemic. Let’s salute each of them who sacrificed their lives while performing duty. Together we shall bridge the gap soon!
