BHIRBUM: West Bengal police files murder case against CBI probing the Bhirbum violence case. The central probing agency was investigating Sheikh, a prime accused in Bogtui violence. The state CID has been ordered to probe the death. CBI officials however, rejected the allegations as “baseless”.
Sheikh’s wife Reshma Bibi on Tuesday had filed a complaint at Rampurhat Police Station, alleging that CBI officials had threatened to kill her husband during their visit to Bogtui village as part of the investigation process. Following his arrest, Sheik was initially remanded in CBI custody for six days, and it was later extended by three more days.
Additionally, claiming that Sheikh was “severely beaten up” in CBI custody, family members of Sheikh also sought a probe into the matter. “My brother was brought to our village a few days ago (as part of the probe) and he told us that CBI officers had been beating him up in custody. He was scared of dying. We want action against the CBI officers who are responsible for my brother’s death,” Sheikh’s elder sister told reporters
Lalan Sheikh, was arrested earlier this month from a hideout along the Bengal-Jharkhand border. He was reportedly found hanging in the washroom of the office that the agency has set up in a guest house in Rampurhat area of Birbhum district to carry out the investigation.
At least 10 people were killed in arson and violence that followed the murder of local Trinamool Congress leader Bhadu Sheikh on March 21 this year. The Calcutta HC had ordered the CBI to probe the incident.
