Corona Update: India records more than 40k cases in a single day; creates lockdown situation

The surge in COVID cases across the country could see educational institutions’ closure, restrictions on public gatherings, and other virus-fighting measures including imposing a lockdown.

The outbreak in the nation termed as the second wave is causing particular concerns, sparking calls for tougher travel restrictions. India recorded more than 40,000 cases in the last 24 hours.

The worrisome hike continues since the last month after the arrival of the mutant strains in Maharashtra. Overall India has now recorded 1,15,54,895 cases since the outbreak. Data reveals 23,623 recoveries and 188 deaths recently.

In Maharashtra 19,828 out of every 10 lakhs, people have tested positive for the virus. The state government recorded 25,681 new infections on Friday, which was 60% of the countrywide record. According to the Health ministry, Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujrat, and Chhattisgarh account for 80% of the daily cases. 

Madhya Pradesh capital Bhopal; Indore and Jabalpur are will be shut due to the lockdown from 10 pm on Saturday to 6 am on Sunday.  The Amarinder Singh government also announced state-wide restrictions till the month-end.  Delhi emerges to join the conclave registering 716 in the past 24 hours.

The country-wide vaccination program shielded over 4 crore individuals so far. These include 76,86,920 HCWs who have taken the 1st dose and 47,69,469 HCWs who have taken the 2nd dose, 79,10,529FLWs (1stdose), 23,16,922 FLWs (2nd dose), 1,53,78,622 beneficiaries more than 60 years old and 30,93,516 beneficiaries aged 45 and above with specific co-morbidities.
