CoronaVirus Update: India records 62,632 cases; Maharashtra Finalises SOP from April 1st to Curb the Spread

New Delhi: Up to 62,632 fresh coronavirus cases were reported in India over the past 24 hours. The Union Health Ministry reported 311 deaths and 28,728 recuperations. The total number of active cases stands at 4,83,012.  The total count of COVID cases in the country now stands at 1,19,71,004 with 1,61,586 deaths since the initiation of the pandemic.

 Authorities at National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, Odisha has directed students to vacate hostels after 14 students tested positive in the campus. Only those who have tested negative for the virus will vacate hostel while others who have come in contact with the infected students will stay there, Registrar Pradeep Kumar Dash said. 

West Bengal’s COVID-19 caseload climbed to 5,85,305 after 639 people tested positive for the virus, while one more fatality pushed the death toll to 10,325, the health department said in a bulletin. The eastern state now has 5,152 active cases, while 5,69,828 patients have so far recovered from the disease. The national capital recorded over 1,904 new cases on the same day, the highest in around three-and-a-half months.

National Conference president and Lok Sabha MP Farooq Abdullah has tested positive for Covid-19, his son Omar announced on Tuesday. “My father has tested positive for Covid-19 and is showing some symptoms. I will be self-isolating along with other family members until we get ourselves tested,” Omar tweeted.

The Indian women’s T20 team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has also tested positive for COVID-19 and is experiencing mild symptoms.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra the epicentre of the spread is planning to release new rules to curb the spread from April 1st. A complete lockdown is not yet finalized but the state’s authorities will convene with CM Udhhav Thackery to pen down final operating procedures to prevent the spread.
