In Huge Spike, India Reports Over 1 L Fresh COVID Cases

New Delhi: India recorded 1,41,986 fresh infections in the past 24 hours. The recovery rate at 97.30 per cent accounted for 40,895 recuperations in the last 24 hours taking the total recoveries to 3,44,12,740. India’s single-day case rise has breached the 1 lakh mark after seven months. It was on June 6th last year India had reported 1,14,460 new cases.

The number of active cases stood at 4,72,169 accounting for 1.34 per cent of the total number of cases. The active cases reported a rise of 1,00,806 in the last 24 hours. However, the mortality rate recorded at 1.37 per cent reported a spike in deaths recording 285 fatalities, taking the cumulative death toll to 4,83,463.

India now has 3,007 cases of the new variant of coronavirus. Omicron has been reported in 27 states, with the most cases in Maharashtra with 876 cases, followed by Delhi with 513 infections. Out of the total Omicron, cases reported so far, 1,203 people have recovered or migrated.

On Friday India crossed the 150-crore Covid-19 vaccination mark. Congratulating on the achievement, Modi said, “ A remarkable day on the vaccination front. Congratulations to our fellow citizens on crossing the 150 crore milestone. Our vaccination drive has ensured that many lives are saved. At the same time, let us also keep following all Covid-19 related protocols.” In the last 24 hours, health authorities administered 90.59 lakh doses.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on 7 January, stated that there is no need for new registration for those going for the ‘precautionary dose’ slated to be rolled out from 10 January for healthcare workers, frontline workers, and people above the age of 60 with comorbidities.
