New Delhi: India at the emergency UNSC meet called by Ukraine abstained from voting against the nuclear power and voiced to set differences through diplomatic dialogue.

The resolution thus did not pass as a permanent member Russia used its veto and moreover only 11 stood in favour excluding India, China and the UAE. Maintaining their stance, the Indian representative used strong words on Russia’s actions but stopped short of voting against it.

“India is deeply disturbed by the recent turn of developments in Ukraine,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador TS Tirumurti, said, explaining India’s abstention.

“All member states should honour principles of international law and UN Charter, as these provide a constructive way forward,” said India, asserting that it had maintained its “consistent, steadfast and balanced position.”

Earlier on Thursday, the US held a dialogue with External Affairs Chief, stressing a’ strong collective response’ to condemn what the White House calls the ‘premeditated, unprovoked and unjustified attack’ on Ukraine.

According to sources, India’s abstention is an effort to find a middle ground with an aim to foster dialogue and diplomacy.
