India To Host UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee

Mumbai: India will host two meetings of the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee later this month, this includes an informal but symbolic meet at the Taj Palace Hotel, Mumbai. The hotel was one of the main targets of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack.

It is to be noted that the Counter-terrorism Committee rarely meets outside its headquarters in New York. The meetings to be held in New Delhi and Mumbai during October 28029 will be the seventh instance of the panel’s members gathering in a foreign country.

This will be the first meetings to be held away from the United Nations headquarters since 2015. The Committee includes all 15 permanent and non-permanent members of the UN Security Council and India is the chair of the chairman for 2022.

The meeting at Taj Palace Hotel is significant as it is the place were Pakistan based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) killed more than 30 people during a three-day siege of Mumbai in November 2008. India takes it as an opportunity to portray India as a victim of cross-border terrorism among UN Security Council members.
