Indian Shot in Kyiv While Trying to Escape; Hospitalized

Kyiv: In yet another tragedy for the Indian parents came the news of a student shot amidst attacks in Kyiv. The MoS for Civil Aviation Gen VK Singh on Friday informed that the student was immediately hospitalized as is undergoing treatment in Kyiv itself.

“We heard reports that a student leaving Kyiv was shot. He was taken back into Kyiv and immediately taken to the hospital. This is happening in the fighting,” General (Retd) VK Singh told reporters at Poland’s Rzeszow airport.

The gun bullet does not look at anyone’s religion or nationality, quoted Singh, asking all to leave Kyiv immediately as per the embassy advisory. Students are currently fleeing the war-torn country crossing borders to board special flights been arranged by the GoI in Poland, Hungary and Romania.

The Russian war on Tuesday claimed the life of a 21-year-old Indian student hailing from Karnataka. Naveen, who took shelter in a bunker was killed during shelling at the Governor House, Kharkiv as he stepped out to gather essentials before boarding the special train later during the day.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, 17,000 Indian nationals have been evacuated from neighbouring countries providing shelter to the stranded Indians. The Indian embassies across these countries have been issuing advisories timely for updating those stranded. Over 6,000 have been brought back home safely, MEA spox reported. Four Union Ministers, Hardeep Singh Puri, Jyotiraditya M Scindia, Kiren Rijiju and Gen (Retd) VK Singh — are overseeing the evacuation efforts in the countries adjoining Ukraine.
