NEW DELHI: The AAP stunned BJP wiping out its 15-year-old saga at the Delhi Municipal Corporation while Congress suffered another poll debacle this poll. Latest trends revealed Arvind Kejriwal-led party crossed the magic figure of 126 leading the saffron Party by over 25 seats. Exit polls stated the party won 129 seats three more than required to maintain the majority in the House of 250. The BJP, on the other hand, is said to have won, 97 seats as of 2:05 pm.
Celebrations have already started at the Aam Aadmi Party office in the national capital after the trends showed that the party crossed the halfway mark in the Delhi Municipal Corporation elections on Wednesday. The party workers gathered in front of the office and rejoiced, danced, and chanted slogans praising party chief Arvind Kejriwal.
The MCD has 250 wards. BJP initially took the lead with the closely contesting competitor AAP playing a cutthroat competition. This was the first election after the MCD was reunified earlier this year. In 2017, the BJP had clinched 181 of the then 270 municipal wards while AAP had won only 48 and the Congress finished third with 30. The election this year was the first since the delimitation process, after three corporations of Delhi – NDMC, SDMC, and EDMC – were incorporated into the MCD, which formally came into existence on May 22.
