On Tuesday, Navjot Singh Sidhu remained the trending topic on Twitter following his surprise resignation as Punjab Congress chief. The cricketer-turned-politician announced his resignation on Twitter, while also stating that he would remain a member of the Congress. Even as social media users came up with one-liners and memes to express their surprise, many slammed the Congress leadership. Netizens recommended a Netflix show to understand Punjab politics.

Mr Sidhu, 57, announced his resignation shortly after the new ministers in Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s cabinet were assigned portfolios. On July 18, he was named the party’s state unit president, amid a bitter power struggle with Amarinder Singh, who resigned as Chief Minister 10 days ago, accusing the party’s high command of humiliating him.

According to BJP spokesperson Gaurav Goel, the Congress is now a party “without a leader.” According to Punjab’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAM), the Indian National Congress has devolved into a “Indian National Circus.” Former Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha said “someone in Delhi needs to be fired” for the upheaval in the party’s Punjab unit.

Hundreds of memes circulated online as well. People joked that Mr Sidhu would return to ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ and reclaim his position. They also circulated memes depicting actor and TV personality Archana Puran Singh’s amusing reaction to the news.
