Russian troops handed control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant back to the Ukrainians and began leaving the heavily contaminated site more than a month after taking it over, authorities said Thursday, as fighting raged on the outskirts of Kyiv and other fronts.
More than 1,400 missiles were fired by Russia in the last month and the count increased despite negotiation talks underway, said a US Defence official on Thursday.
As per local reporters, 1,458 Ukrainians were evacuated from hot spots on March 31. According to Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, 631 people were evacuated from besieged Mariupol to Zaporizhzhia in a convoy of 17 buses. The rest were evacuated from Berdiansk, Enerhodar, and other cities in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. On Thursday she also informed that they seized 14 tons of food and medicine intended for Ukrainian civilians. The International Committee of the Red Cross has declared to facilitate the evacuation of residents out of the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol.
According to the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, at least 1,232 civilians have died and 1,935 have been injured since Russia invaded Ukraine.
