Maharashtra: Investigating an illegal abortion case at a private hospital in Maharashtra, officers reported the discovery of 11 skulls and 54 bones of foetuses from a biogas plant ducking a trench of speculations on the hospital authorities. Reportedly, the carcasses surfaced on Wednesday, 12 January while officials were probing a separate case of abortion of a 13-year-old girl. Authorities had launched a probe into the discovery and sent the remains for a laboratory examination. The investigation is sought to ascertain whether the remains were disposed of legally or illegally.

Based on a complaint, on 9th January, a doctor and a nurse of a private hospital in Arvi tehsil were arrested. The complainant claimed that Dr Rekha Kadam had performed an illegal abortion of a minor child.  As per the reports, the minor girl’s family had brought her to the Kadam hospital after she was impregnated by a boy with whom she was in a relationship. On being interrogated, the family stated that the boy’s family had threatened to defame the girl if she didn’t undergo the abortion. Moreover, sources claim the procedure which was performed last week was funded by the boy’s parents.

A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
