Woman Corporator Commits Suicide; Journo Held for Abetment

Raigarh: A woman corporator allegedly commits suicide after a local journalist spread rumours about her, the Raigarh police said on Friday.
“A woman corporator of the ruling Congress died by suicide on Thursday after which we have started investigation. During the probe, the police found a note addressing the local police, in which the corporator accused Pandey of constantly running fake news against her,” Raigarh SP Abhishek Meena said.
Pandey was also writing against the corporator on Facebook and other social media platforms due to which she was very upset,” the SP further added.
The accused journalist identified as Amit Pandey works for a new portal. Raigarh Collector, Sanjana Sharma, allegedly consumed poison on the intervening night of Wednesday leaving behind a note accusing Amit of her death. The collector breathed her last on Thursday afternoon while being treated, SHO Chakradharnagar PS, Abhinav said.
In the handwritten note recovered, it was learnt the corporator was disturbed over ‘false’ news spread against her by Pandey. She accused him of spreading misinformation on social media.
The journalist is arrested on charges of abetment to suicide and further investigations are underway, officials said.
